August in Quepos means green season fishing. Dorado and yellowfin tuna offshore, roosterfish holding on the inshore rock, humpback whales in the middle of their southern-season visit, and afternoon rain that rewards a morning departure.
This is the first monthly report from the Vuelto Loco. The short version for August: think dorado, tuna and roosterfish, leave the dock early, and do not be surprised if a humpback interrupts the ride out.
Offshore
August belongs to the May through September pattern on this coast. That means dorado working the current lines and floating debris, yellowfin tuna pushing bait to the surface with seabirds marking them from above, and wahoo as the fast surprise nobody complains about. The photo on this report is what that looks like when it comes together: tuna up top, birds working, everyone scrambling for a rod.
Sailfish and marlin do get caught in August. We just will not promise them, because the honest math favors December through April for billfish. If a sailfish shows up in your spread this month, enjoy it as a bonus.
The full day offshore charter is the right trip for this pattern. Eight hours buys enough range to find the fish rather than hope they find you.
Inshore
The roosterfish do not read the calendar. They hold on the rock and reef between Punta Quepos and Punta Catedral in August the same as any other month, alongside snapper, snook and grouper. The half day inshore trip stays the family pick: four hours, calmer water, and back in time for lunch with plenty left of the day.
The weather, honestly
August is green season. The pattern most days is a bright, calm morning and a rain shower somewhere in the afternoon, which is exactly why the boat leaves at 6:45am. Morning departures fish the best window and are usually back before the sky does anything dramatic. The captain makes the safety call on the day, every day.
What green season gives back: the hills are at their greenest, the marina is unhurried, boats have open dates, and prices across Quepos run lower than in the December rush.
The whale bonus
August sits mid-window for the southern humpback migration, roughly July through October here. Crews see whales on offshore runs often enough that it stops feeling like luck. If the whales are the point of your trip rather than the bonus, that is what the private whale watching charter is for.
