Before you book
Do I need a fishing license in Costa Rica?
Yes. Everyone fishing in Costa Rica needs a valid sport fishing license from INCOPESCA, the Costa Rican Fisheries Institute. An 8-day license costs about $16.95 per person. The application asks for passport and personal details, which is why you buy your own rather than have us do it for you. Buy it online before you travel, or in person at the INCOPESCA office at Marina Pez Vela on the morning of your charter. It only takes a few minutes, but give yourself a little time before your departure so it does not eat into your day on the water.
Is the fishing license included in the price?
No. The license is the one thing not covered by your charter price. Everything else on the boat is included. Budget about $16.95 per angler on top of your charter.
Is IVA included in your prices?
No. All prices on this site are shown before 13% IVA, Costa Rica's sales tax. Any additional guest charge is quoted with tax already included.
What currency are prices in?
All prices are in US dollars.
How many guests can the Vuelto Loco take?
It depends on the charter. Fishing charters carry up to 10 guests, with 6 included in the base price. Cruises carry up to 12 guests, with 8 included. The extra guest rate differs too, so ask us when you inquire and we will quote your exact group.
What types of charter do you offer?
Full day offshore fishing, half day inshore fishing, a sunset coastal cruise, a morning snorkeling and coastal cruise, whale watching, and fully bespoke private charters built around whatever you have in mind.
On the day
What should I bring?
Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a towel, comfortable clothing and shoes, and a camera. We provide everything else, including gear, drinks and food.
Is fishing gear included?
Yes. Top-tier rods, reels, tackle and lures are all included on every fishing charter, along with a licensed captain and certified fishing assistants.
Is snorkeling available?
Yes. Snorkeling equipment is included on both the sunset coastal cruise and the morning snorkeling and coastal cruise. It can also be added to a bespoke charter.
Can we bring our own food or drinks?
Absolutely. Just tell the crew in advance so we can make space and keep it cold.
Is the boat suitable for children and families?
Yes. Vuelto Loco is a family-friendly boat and the crew are good with kids. Tell us their ages when you book and we will plan the day around them.
What if I get seasick?
If you are prone to motion sickness, take seasickness medication before the trip and follow the timing on the package. We do not carry medication on board. On the shorter coastal cruises you stay closer to land, which most people find easier.
Will I see whales and dolphins?
Often, but never guaranteed. Humpback migration is seasonal and wildlife does what it likes. Our crew track the whales daily and will always put you in the best position they can, but nobody can promise a sighting.
Where do we meet?
At Marina Pez Vela in Quepos. We will send exact directions and a dock number when your charter is confirmed. It is roughly 20 minutes from Manuel Antonio.
Weather and changes
What happens if the weather is bad?
Our crew watch conditions closely. On the morning of your trip the captain assesses the weather and the sea and decides whether it is safe to go out. If it is not, we reschedule for a time that works for you, or refund you in full. Your safety comes before the trip.
Can I change the date after booking?
Yes, subject to availability and the cancellation terms below. The earlier you tell us, the easier it is.
