Most sites that show you a cookie banner have already set the cookies before you click anything. This one has not. Until you choose Accept all, no cookie is set: Google Analytics counts visits without one.
What is stored before you choose
One thing, and it is not a cookie. Your answer to the banner is kept in your browser's local storage so we do not ask again on every page. It holds a single value, Accept all or Essential only. It never leaves your device and it tells us nothing about you.
What is stored if you choose Accept all
Google Analytics sets its own cookies to tell one visit apart from another and to work out whether a reader is new or returning. Before that choice, and if you choose Essential only, it runs in Google's consent mode instead: no cookies and no identifier that follows you between visits, only aggregated, anonymous counts. We use this to see which pages people actually read, which tells us what to write next. We do not use it for advertising, and there is no advertising tag on this site to use it with.
What is never stored
- No advertising or remarketing cookies
- No social media pixels. The Instagram and WhatsApp links are ordinary links and set nothing until you click them
- No cross-site tracking of any kind
Changing your mind
The "Cookie settings" link in the footer reopens the banner on any page, so you can switch between Accept all and Essential only whenever you like. Clearing your browser's site data for this domain also removes the saved choice. Essential only does not break anything: every page, form and photo works exactly the same either way.
