The coast off Manuel Antonio and Quepos gets humpback whales twice a year: the southern migration from roughly July to October and the northern one from December to March. That adds up to more whale months than almost anywhere else, and August sits right in the middle of a window.
Most whale destinations get one season. This coast gets two, because humpbacks from both hemispheres treat the warm water off Manuel Antonio as the maternity ward.
The two windows
July through October, humpbacks arrive from the southern hemisphere, the longer and busier of the two visits. December through March, the northern population takes its turn. Put together, whales are in these waters the better part of eight months a year, which is why crews here treat a breach on the horizon as a regular workday sight rather than an event.
The warm, sheltered water is the draw. Mothers bring calves here to nurse and teach, which means season sightings are often not just a whale but a pair, close in and unhurried.
What a sighting actually looks like
Some days it is a blow and a tail at distance. Good days are breaching, tail slapping, and a calf practicing both while its mother idles. Dolphins run this coast year-round and frequently escort the boat, and sea turtles drift through on their own schedule. We say this every time and mean it: sightings are common in season and promised never. Any operator guaranteeing whales is selling something other than whales.
Private boat, and why it changes the day
