Your hotel is on the Manuel Antonio hill; the boat is at Marina Pez Vela. Taxis and shuttles cover the gap constantly, it is one road, and at charter hour the traffic is asleep. For a full day trip departing 6:45am, you leave the hotel around 6:15am and you are rigging baits while the sky turns orange. The half day departs the same time and has you back in Manuel Antonio for a late beach lunch.
The distance is a feature in disguise: the marina sits close to the continental shelf drop, which is why Quepos earned the sportfishing capital title that Manuel Antonio's hotels quietly borrow.
Which trip fits a Manuel Antonio stay
Most Manuel Antonio visitors are not on a dedicated fishing trip; they are on a Costa Rica trip with a fishing day in it. That shapes the choice, and the inshore versus offshore comparison walks it in full:
The half day inshore trip is four hours for roosterfish, snapper and snook along the rock between Punta Quepos and Punta Catedral, in sight of the coastline. Kids do well, mildly seasick-prone partners do well, and the day still has room for the park or the beach. $1,725 for the private boat, up to six guests.
The full day offshore is the serious one: eight hours chasing sailfish, marlin, tuna and dorado in blue water. $3,100, private, up to six. If your dates land December through April, this is the trip the region is famous for.
Not an angler at all? The same boat runs sunset cruises and whale watching in season, so a mixed group can split the difference across a stay.
The small print nobody puts up front
Everyone fishing needs the INCOPESCA license, about $17 for eight days, bought online or at the marina the morning of; the FAQ walks through it. Billfish are catch and release by law. And every trip is private aboard a 45-foot Viking with a bathroom, air conditioning and lunch aboard, which matters more at hour six than it sounds at booking.
